Home for Abandoned Children
Help Us Provide a Home for Abandoned Children
We often hear that the youth is the future of our nation, and that our progress depends on them. Yet, the youth of South Africa is in dire need of support as they struggle to survive in an environment that stacks the odds against them from the day they are born. Back in 2014, the National Adoption Coalition South Africa (NACSA) estimated that there are 18.5 million children in South Africa, of which 4.5 million – or almost a quarter – live with neither of their parents. While not all of these kids are necessarily abandoned, it does provide an indication of the mammoth task a home for abandoned children such as Abraham Kriel Bambanani faces.
Complicating this issue, is the fact that there is no up-to-date statistics to help guide the necessary response. The last nationwide study on this issue was done a decade ago, when Child Welfare SA estimated that about 3 500 babies were abandoned in 2010 alone. Since then, the number of orphans in the country has increased by over 30%, while adoption rates have decreased by about 50%, escalating the need for children to find a safe home.
Abraham Kriel Bambanani is just one of many organisations that try to provide a home for abandoned children. The challenge is that it requires so much more than a mere roof and a bed to provide a safe haven and the opportunity to develop into a well-adjusted and self-sufficient adult, although this is a very important start.
Therefore, Abraham Kriel Bambanani is focused on not only providing a home, but also education and developmental support for abandoned children. These kids often also require medical intervention, mental and trauma support, as well as nutritional care to address malnourishment that can impact their future development.
When all of these factors are taken into consideration, it becomes clear that providing a home and proper care for abandoned children is a complicated task that requires substantial time, effort and resources. This is not something that we can do on our own. In addition to government grants, we are heavily reliant on the generosity of members of the public, as well as private businesses to help support us.
There are many ways you can help support our home for abandoned children – from cash donations to food parcels, clothes and even sharing your services. Every little bit helps, and your contribution can make the world of difference to a child.
